Tomodachi Life Personality Guide
The short version: add Movement + Speech for the column, add Energy + Attitude for the row, then match the two totals to the chart.
The Tomodachi Life personality formula in short
Tomodachi Life personality is based on two totals. Movement plus Speech chooses the column; Energy plus Attitude chooses the row. The cell where they meet is the type. If you just want to drag the sliders and see the answer, use the interactive calculator.
Horizontal
M + S
Movement plus Speech, from 0 to 15.
Vertical
E + A
Energy plus Attitude, from 0 to 15.
How Tomodachi Life personality is calculated, step by step
- 1
Read the four scoring sliders
Only Movement, Speech, Energy, and Attitude count. Each one has eight steps, and every step has a hidden score. Overall is ignored.
- 2
Add them into two totals
M+S is Movement plus Speech. E+A is Energy plus Attitude. Because Speech and Attitude can reach 8, each total can climb to 15.
- 3
Put each total in a range
Each total lands in 0–3, 4–7, 8–11, or 12–15. Those ranges are the chart columns and rows.
- 4
Cross the two bands on the chart
The M+S band picks the column, the E+A band picks the row, and the cell where they meet is the personality.
Worked example
Say a Mii scores Movement 6, Speech 7, Energy 6, and Attitude 7. Then M+S = 6 + 7 = 13 and E+A = 6 + 7 = 13. Both totals sit in the 12–15 band, the top-right cell of the chart, so this Mii becomes a Go-Getter in the Outgoing group.

How this personality chart was checked
The calculator adds Movement + Speech and Energy + Attitude, then matches those totals to the 4x4 personality grid. Overall is left out because it does not affect the result.

How to read the personality chart
The chart is a grid of M+S bands across the top and E+A bands down the side. The four groups each own one 2×2 corner, and each corner holds four personalities. Find your two bands, follow the column and row, and the cell where they cross is your type.
Names shown are the North American versions. The EU release renames most types — the calculator can switch between NA and EU labels.
How to make a specific personality on purpose
Want a specific type? Work backwards from the cell. Choose the group corner, choose one of its four cells, then set the sliders so M+S and E+A land in those ranges. The setups below are examples, not the only answers — any sliders that hit the same two ranges give the same result.
Where to change it in-game
- 1. Press Y to open the resident list and pick the Mii you want.
- 2. Press A to travel to that Mii, then press A again to check on them.
- 3. With the info panel showing, press Y to open the Mii Menu.
- 4. Choose Edit Mii, then Personality at the bottom of that menu.
- 5. Set Movement, Speech, Energy, and Attitude to match the target, leave Overall wherever you like, and confirm.
This is the flow in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream on Switch. The 3DS original reaches the same sliders through the Mii's profile screen, and you can re-edit personality as often as you want in either version.

House color lookup

In Tomodachi Life, a Mii's house or apartment color follows their personality group. Pick the color family you spotted and the chart jumps to the matching group.
Common Tomodachi Life personality mistakes
Counting the Overall slider
Overall looks like it belongs with the rest, but it never enters the formula. Set it for the character's style and ignore it when planning a type.
Treating Speech and Attitude like 0–7
Both skip the value 4 and run 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8. Forgetting the jump puts your totals one point low near the top of the range.
Capping a total at 14
Because Speech and Attitude reach 8, M+S and E+A can each reach 15, not 14. The highest band is 12–15, and the most intense corner needs that 15.
Tomodachi Life personality guide FAQ
How many personality types are there?
There are 16 Tomodachi Life personality types in total. They are arranged as four groups with four types in each group, which is why the personality chart works as a 4x4 grid.
What do personality types affect?
Personality changes how a Mii tends to behave on the island: their reactions, attitude, sitting poses, and the way they interact with other Miis. It also decides the color family of their house or apartment, matching the color of their personality group.
Can you change a Mii's personality type?
Yes. You can change it whenever you want: select the Mii, open Edit Mii, then choose Personality Type at the bottom of the edit screen. From there, adjust the personality sliders or pick a different target type and confirm the change.
Are the personality types the same as Tomodachi Life on 3DS?
Yes. The Switch version uses the same set of personality types as Tomodachi Life on 3DS, and community comparisons indicate the hidden personality values line up with the 3DS data as well.
